The Unmediated Vision of William Hawkins at RICCO MARESCA

James Kalm was intrigued upon reading that this show by William Hawkins had been curated by Chris Martin. Martin has appeared in numerous Kalm Report videos, and has achieved high recognition as an innovator and influence among many young artists. William Hawkins (1895-1990) is perhaps one of the most important and prolific “Outsider” artists of the past fifty years. Not becoming a full time artist until after retiring at the age of seventy, Hawkins quickly mastered the often denigrated medium enamel house paint, to develop a broad and spontaneous style that spotlights his brushwork and unique color sense. His subjects are varied and include architecture, wild animals, mythic beasts, biblical themes and history painting. With an intuitive feel for layering color, and a confident handling of composition, Hawkins work bares an urgency of Abstract Expressionism and Neo-Expression but with out the academic pretenses of high culture. This program was recorded September 14, 2017.
