James Kalm has the privilege of bringing viewers along for a stroll through this, the “Centennial Celebration” of Alfonso Ossorio. Featuring works from the Congregations, circa 1959-69, this series is perhaps the breakthrough body of work that brought Ossorio to prominence. While bearing similarities to Art Brut works (which the artist was preserving and exhibiting at his Long Island estate), as well as early manifestations of funk art assemblage, which was beginning to be displayed in California, Ossorio’s works have their own unique quality. Tinged with an exotic Surrealism, and an obsessive horror vacui (fear of empty space) these pieces still possess beautiful harmonies of hue, and a poetic juxtaposition of objects, transmitting the artist’s masterful sensitivity to color, form and texture. This program was recorded October 15, 2016 in Chelsea. A musical introduction is provided by COYOTE & CROW.
